Advertising with ChatGPT in the Netherlands

Advertising on ChatGPT is becoming a real option for Dutch advertisers, but it is not yet a standard media buy. European access is being introduced through OpenAI’s Ads Solutions team, selected agencies and technology partners. Availability, buying conditions and campaign features can still differ by market. If you want to launch this quarter, start by confirming access in the Netherlands. Then define a narrow use case, a defensible ChatGPT testbudget and measurable commercial goals.

What advertising on ChatGPT means in practice

ChatGPT advertisements place a paid message inside a conversational environment. That context matters. A person may be researching software, comparing suppliers, exploring implementation options or trying to solve a specific operational problem. The advertisement sits near that conversation, rather than beside a list of search results or inside a social feed.

OpenAI says advertisements are clearly labelled and visually separate from the assistant’s answer. Payment does not determine what the model says in its answer. Advertisers are therefore buying ad placement, not inclusion in an AI-generated recommendation.

Initial reports indicate that advertisements are shown to users of the Free and Go plans. Paid products such as Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise remain ad-free. This limits addressable reach, particularly for B2B campaigns aimed at professionals who may use paid accounts through their employer.

Early targeting is reportedly based mainly on the subject of the conversation, supported by limited signals such as country and device type. Do not assume the detailed audience profiles available in established advertising platforms. The strength of AI advertising is likely to come from contextual relevance: matching an offer to the problem a user is discussing at that moment.

This makes adverteren in AI-chatbots closer to contextual demand capture than conventional behavioural advertising. It can reach people while they are framing a need, but it may provide less audience detail and less predictable scale.

Check access before planning a ChatGPT campaign

The European rollout should be treated as operationally fluid. Some advertisers may gain access through a direct OpenAI relationship. Others may need an agency or technology partner. A broadly available European self-service Ads Manager should not be assumed until OpenAI confirms it for your account and market.

Before reserving budget, ask the sales or platform contact for written answers to the following questions:

  • Is inventory currently available to advertisers targeting users in the Netherlands?
  • Which account, contractual and invoicing requirements apply?
  • Is there a minimum media commitment or required campaign duration?
  • Which targeting controls are available for language, location, device and conversation topic?
  • Which creative formats, character limits and landing-page rules apply?
  • Which reporting fields, conversion integrations and attribution windows are supported?
  • Can brand exclusions, sensitive-topic exclusions and frequency controls be configured?

These answers affect whether a test is feasible. A media plan built around features that are not yet available is not a plan. It is a guess.

Your first ChatGPT campaign should also have a specific role in the wider channel mix. For many B2B advertisers, the sensible starting point is upper- or mid-funnel demand capture. Relevant conversations could concern vendor selection, implementation, pricing structures, product comparisons or a defined business problem. This decision belongs in your wider digital strategy and consultancy process, rather than being delegated entirely to a platform representative.

Set a responsible ChatGPT testbudget

There is no universal starting budget for ChatGPT ads. Platform minimums may apply, and the right amount depends on your economics. A responsible ChatGPT testbudget starts with the outcome you need to observe and the maximum price you can pay for it.

Work backwards from a qualified commercial action. For an enterprise software company, that might be a sales-accepted demo request. For a consultancy, it could be a qualified discovery call. For an ecommerce advertiser, it may be a first purchase above a defined margin threshold. Avoid making clicks the primary business goal.

A simple planning formula is:

Test media budget = target number of qualified actions × maximum acceptable cost per qualified action.

Suppose your business can accept a cost of €400 for a genuinely qualified enquiry and you want 25 such enquiries before making a directional decision. The resulting media allowance is €10,000. This is a planning example, not a benchmark for ChatGPT performance. If the platform’s minimum commitment is higher, you must decide whether the learning is worth the extra exposure. Do not increase the budget simply because access is scarce.

Separate the test budget into three parts:

  • Media: the amount paid for impressions, clicks or another platform buying unit.
  • Production: campaign copy, landing-page changes, creative variants and feed work where required.
  • Measurement: analytics configuration, CRM fields, quality checks and reporting.

A test can fail even when the media performs well. Weak landing pages, missing CRM data or slow lead follow-up can hide real demand. Budget for those elements before launch, not after the first report.

Also set a stop rule. Pause if traffic is materially irrelevant, tracking is unreliable, lead quality is consistently poor or spend cannot generate enough observations to answer the test question. A fixed end date without a stop rule encourages teams to spend the full allocation regardless of what they learn.

Measure advertising on ChatGPT beyond the click

The first objective is not to prove that ChatGPT is a permanent channel. It is to determine whether it can produce incremental, commercially relevant demand at an acceptable cost.

Choose one primary outcome and a small set of diagnostic measures. A B2B campaign might use sales-accepted opportunities as its primary outcome, with landing-page engagement, form completion, qualified-lead rate and pipeline progression as diagnostic measures. Keep platform-reported conversions separate from CRM-confirmed outcomes.

Your measurement plan should cover the full route from ad exposure to commercial result:

  • Use distinct campaign parameters for ChatGPT traffic.
  • Create a dedicated source value in the CRM instead of grouping it under referral or paid search.
  • Record the campaign, offer and landing-page variant with each lead.
  • Apply the same qualification criteria used for other paid channels.
  • Review assisted conversions and direct conversions separately.
  • Compare lead quality, sales acceptance and progression with existing acquisition channels.

Attribution will be imperfect. Someone may see a ChatGPT advertisement, research the company elsewhere and return directly several days later. This is not a reason to accept vague reporting. It is a reason to combine platform data, web analytics and CRM evidence through a clear business intelligence for marketing setup.

Where possible, use a holdout, geographic split or carefully matched comparison period. Small B2B volumes may not support a statistically decisive experiment. In that case, state the limitation. Use the result as directional evidence and avoid presenting attribution estimates as settled fact.
